New Alternate and Advanced Mesothelioma Treatments

There are lots of new routines to treat mesothelioma being tested. These new routines combine conventional treatments or include something completely new.

Angiogenesis Drugs
Significant progress has been made in the early cancer detection and treatment options but still there are cancers, such as Mesothelioma, that are not easy to treat. Since 2006, scientists have learned quite a bit about the differences between normal cells and cancer cells. They are working overtime to come up with drugs that can treat mesothelioma without causing any side effects. Angiogenesis drugs are promising treatments that have no side effects attached and target the tumor rather than the normal cells of the body.

Immunotherapy and Mesothelioma
Commonly known as biological therapy, immunotherapy uses the immune system of the body to protect it against disease. Scientists have come to the conclusion that the immune system can distinguish between cancer cells and healthy cells and it can get rid of cancerous cells. The main objective of immunotherapy is to repair and increase the natural anticancer function of the immune system. Substances employed in immunotherapy are known as biological response modifiers. With biological response modifiers, you will find that your body can fight disease much better.

There are plenty of biological response modifiers such as antibodies and cytokines that occur naturally in the body. However, with advancements in technology, scientists are making biological response modifiers in the laboratory that can imitate natural immune response agents. These biological response modifiers increase the immune system so cancer cell growth can be reduced. They also create cancer cells that can be easily destroyed by the immune system.

Photodynamic Therapy for Mesothelioma
Photodynamic therapy is a treatment set on the basis of the “single-celled organisms” concept. The main function of photodynamic therapy is to get rid of the cancerous cells using fixed frequency light. By using fixed frequency light, photosensitizing drugs are activated. Generally, photosensitizing drugs are accumulated in body tissues.

In photodynamic therapy, a photosensitizing drug is administered intravenously. Within two or three days, photosensitizing drugs selectively focus on diseased cells while avoiding normal cells. After this, the treated cancer cells are exposed to a laser light directed on the cancer site using a fiber-optic device which allows manipulation of the laser light.

The major side effect associated with photodynamic therapy is skin sensitivity. If you are undergoing photodynamic therapy, you must avoid direct sunlight for a period of one month. Other side effects of photodynamic therapy are nausea, eye sensitivity to light, vomiting and a metallic taste in the mouth.

Other Therapies for Mesothelioma Patients

Gene Therapy treats the disease at the DNA level. For individuals with abnormal genes, this therapy can be quite useful.

Replacement Gene Therapy where a missing gene is substituted. The p53 gene is often the main target for gene substitution.

Knockout Gene Therapy the emphasis is on the oncogenes products (cancer causing genes) that are responsible for tumor formation.

Photodynamic Therapy Treatment for Mesothelioma

One of the newest and most exciting types of therapy for mesothelioma is called photodynamic therapy (PDT). These are 4 commonly asked questions about this form of treatment.

1. How does photodynamic therapy work?

A drug called Photofrin is injected into a patient, this drug specifically targets and bonds to mesothelioma cells. When the patient is exposed to laser or high intensity light, the photofrin on the cancer cells become active and kill the tumor cells. Doctors insert a fiber optic cable into the patient's chest, and turn on the light on the chest area.

2. How does the light work?

The light interacts with the drug, creating a special kind of oxygen that eats away the cancerous cells. Timing and aim are critical in PDT, it takes some time for the drug to actually concentrate in the cancer cells and leave the normal cells. When applied at the right time the light only affects the cancerous cells without disturbing the normal cells.

3. What are the drawbacks of photodynamic therapy?

The main drawbacks of this therapy are that the laser light is not very strong, typically only penetrating three centimeters or so, so PDT is best used against tumors that are close to the skin or on the surface of the internal organs, for tumors that have penetrated deep into the organs it might not be of significant help. The drugs used in this type of therapy are often absorbed by healthy cells as well, but usually dissipates very quickly, allowing them to regenerate where the cancerous cells had taken over.

4.What are the side effects of photodynamic therapy ?

There are also significant side effects. The major side effect is photosensitivity to sunlight {increased sensitivity to sunlight}, so a patient must avoid the sun for up to six weeks or risk sun damage. Furthermore, many patients report a metallic taste in their mouths accompanied by severe nausea. Nevertheless, this radical new treatment has demonstrated a marked improvement in many of the clinical trials, but is yet to be approved for general use.

Proton Therapy

In principle, radiation and proton radiation of standard cancer was same. Both of them relied on the process of 'ionisation' that changed the characteristics of the atom in the molecule of the cancer cell. All of our body parts consisted of molecules that consisted of the atom..Each atom had the core of the atom that was surrounded by the electron. If the proton that had the mass and energy that were high beyond the atom, the proton will pull the electron left his orbit, this process was known as 'ionisation'.
As a result, the characteristics of this atom will change.
In line with that, the place molecule of this atom was will change his characteristics.
The process of the change in these characteristics that it was hoped happened because of resulting in destruction of the DNA composition and very material genetic to cancer cells.
Further, DNA the broken cell made the cell not have a function of, especially dividing and spreading.
Because the capacity improved the low cancer cell although being helped with the enzyme, the process continue this resulted in the broken cancer cell permanently.

In the meantime, with standard radiation, his side-effect was healthy cells in and around the cancer cell will be broken.
This happened because of energy of light radiation could not be focused to the certain area, but was spread to around the area of the illness.
The lack of radiation was with these photons caused precisely by the natural characteristics of the particle of the compiler of the light, photons, that did not have the mass and this cargo.
Energy that was brought by photons will be easy to be absorbed by the medium round the cancer cell personally.
The matter above did not happen to proton radiation.
Because the proton had the mass that was far more difficult than the electron mass and positive electricity cargo, energy that was brought by the proton could be speed up in such a way as the medium could not round cancer absorb energy that was brought by the bundle of the proton.
As a result, the bundle of the proton could be arranged to be able to invest his energy to the location of the cancer cell that purpose.
Proton radiation will be increasingly effective results at this time because of information of three dimensions of the cancer cell could be received with imaging process used the equipment like the PAINT scan.
With this information, the distribution of energy of three dimensions that were needed to deposit proton energy could be obtained.
This will more facilitate the dose regulation of proton radiation that was more comprehensive for a cancer cell characteristically especially.

Although the age of the research of proton therapy has for centuries, the cancer kind that could be treated with new proton therapy cancer that still in the early stage and did not yet spread to the other body part.
Enough cancer kinds that succeeded in being treated with this therapy.
Including being prostate cancer and cancer to children.
Prostate cancer was cancer that attacked the prostate gland that was gotten in the system of the man's reproduction.
Usually happened to the man aged continued, but sometimes also to the young man.
In the USA, the number of sufferers of kind cancer was relatively high, achieved the figure 220.
000 during 2003.
Now in Asia this figure was far more lower, around 10 percent of the figure in the USA.
One of the choices of medical treatment for prostate cancer was with radiation.
This medical treatment most more did not become the choice than the appointment operation of cancer.
Unfortunately, not all the cancer parts were covered with conventional radiation.
So, the best choice was with proton radiation.
In the Hospital of Loma Linda, the USA, personally more than 900 patients from 1991 to 1996 underwent this radiation with very satisfactory results.

In the meantime, cancer medical treatment to children with conventional radiation will endanger healthy cells round the cancer cell, that definitely relative aged young.
Medical treatment with proton therapy helped the doctor to treat only cancer cells and to not increase the risk of destruction of healthy cells.
The child's cancer that was treated with this therapy including cancer to the brain and the eyes.
Because of the development cost of facilities of proton therapy was still relative very expensive, only developed countries that had these facilities.
All over the world at this time only was gotten by 20 facilities.
In several European countries and the USA, apart from developing facilities of proton therapy that completely just, facilities to faster the particle that was finished the period with him for the research of particle physics was shifted by his function to the place of medical treatment with proton radiation.
Swiss with Paul Scherrer Institute and Canada with TRIUMF specialised with medical treatment of eyes cancer.
Germany had several facilities, among them in the Muenchen city, Berlin, and Heidelberg.
In the meantime, the USA had three centre of proton therapy, respectively in Loma Linda California, Boston Massachusetts, and in Bloomington Indiana.

Hormone Replacement Therapy

Property of mixtures of conjugated equine estrogens (EEC), the common form of HRT, and progestin, although not progesterone, the alignment of their effects. Studies have shown that certain risks associated with these combinations of equine estrogens and progestogens. Since these were more frequent and longer, many more studies of this type of hormones, that some of the new forms with new systems and thus more is known about them. Or is there no such risks, other forms of estrogens and progesterone, and other systems are not yet seen.

Bioidentical forms of estrogen and progesterone have not been comprehensively investigated. This distinction is important because the adverse biological effects of xenoestrogens and progestogens used in the study of Premarin and Prempro are not necessarily generalize to human forms with addition of estrogen and progesterone. For example, a pilot study in JAMA by Smith, Bert Stern, et al. [1] found clinical evidence that oral conjugated equine estrogens causes clotting, but the estrogenic compounds tested in the same study, bioidentical esterified estrogens, no. Conjugated equine estrogens are found with increased venous thrombotic risk. In stark contrast, the study found that users of esterified estrogen had no increase in venous thrombotic risk.

Moreover, the method of administration may be as important as the type of estrogen administered. For example, a large study published in The Lancet Scarabino et al. [2] compared the effects of oral versus transdermal estrogen skin patch (especially beta-oestradiol-17, the "bioidentical human estrogen) and found that oral administration was associated with an increase of 3-times the risk of venous coagulation disorders (thrombophlebitis, pulmonary embolism), while the patch does not result in excess risk. This difference is probably due to the fact that transdermal estrogen is absorbed directly into the bloodstream, whereas oral estrogen and changes in the liver before release into the bloodstream.

Studies find negative effects on the health of the equine estrogens and progestogens have been reported often, wrongly, as the effects of estrogen and progesterone. " It is important to the usual inaccurate generalization in the review of the reports. On the other hand, creams, gels, etc., the word "bioidentical" hormone compounds preparations own pharmacies are not subject to FDA regulation or oversight, so that the delivered dose and blood levels of the hormone can be unpredictable and highly variable, and less large-scale studies of these elements.

It has become increasingly clear that oral estrogen and progestin pills horses may be a number of risks, including the risks of worsening problems in the liver or gall bladder and dangerous blood clots. Long-term use of equine estrogens probably increases the risk of breast cancer. [3]. In women with a uterus, therapy with equine estrogen, progesterone unanimously by, it is widely recognized to reduce the risk of uterine cancer in women with intact uterus lining. This combination of ownership may also impact on the level of triglycerides in the blood and increase the risk for adverse cardiovascular events. Although HRT with equine estrogens and progestogens once widely thought to promote cardiovascular health in women, 4 February 2004, the American Heart Association guidelines stated that they do not as an agent of the health center to increase or decrease the chances of cardiovascular disease.

In 2006, the results of large, ongoing study by the Harvard nursing observation showed that a pill containing a combination of estrogen with methyl testosterone (a synthetic analogue of testosterone) had an increased risk of breast cancer than those who are not methyl testosterone. Unfortunately there are few or no studies have tested the safety or benefits of bioidentical testosterone, or low doses of the pill is not the administration of testosterone, avoiding the first pass through the liver.

Because of the risks and potential problems for the equine oestrogens and progestogens, a number of alternative therapies have been developed, including lifestyle changes, botanical hormone no chemotherapy (phytoestrogens), and bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. To reduce the risk of osteoporosis without hormones, dietary changes, the absorption of calcium, exercise and drugs such as biphosphates, selective estrogen receptor modulators, calcitonin, or have been tried.

HRT is more effective than the pursuit of reversing the effects of aging on muscles.

Mesothelioma FAQ (Gene Therapy, Immunotherapy, VATS)

How does gene therapy work?

Gene therapy is a procedure for treatment of mesothelioma cancers by altering the expression of a person’s genes in line a therapeutic goal. The objective and aim of gene therapy is centred on rectifying disease at DNA level and to compensate for the abnormal genes.

How does replacement gene therapy work?

Replacement gene therapy displaces a mutated gene, most often a tumor suppressor gene, and replaces it with a normal copy of that gene which function to control cell growth and division. The p53 gene, the most known and common gene altered in cancer has turned out to be a prime target for replacement of gene, and has been successful in preventing cell growth, preventing angiogenesis that is the development of a tumor’s blood supply, and to induce apoptosis.

How does knockout gene therapy work?

Knockout gene therapy aims at the products of oncogenes (a gene that can stimulate the formation of tumour) with effort to rendering them inert and decrease the growth of cell.

How does immunotherapy work?

Immunotherapy, often times referred to as biological therapy is a new procedure for the treatment of mesothelioma cancers, which applies the use the body’s own immune system to fight against disease in mesothelioma patients. Medical Researchers have discovered that the body’s immune system is able to identify the difference between healthy cells and mesothelioma cancers, and destroy the bad or cancerous cells.

Immunotherapy as a treatment of mesothelioma is intended to repair, incite, or improve the body’s immune system’s innate anticancer role.

What is VATS?

Lately, the use of video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) have turned out to be one of the most commonly used techniques in mesothelioma diagnosis. Here, mesothelioma patients are usually put under general anesthesia, and then several small ports are cut through the wall of the chest,in the case of pleural mesothelioma. Then a small camera, through a scope is inserted into one of the incision, and tissues specimens or samples are retrieved from other openings using other surgical instruments.

In several cases, thoracotomy can be replaced by this video-assisted technique, which needs a much bigger port to get access to the chest cavity, and because of its minimal invasion, mesothelioma patients usually have less pain after the procedure and a short time to recover. Thoracotomy has been used in peritoneal mesothelioma.

Gene Therapy Treatment for Mesothelioma

An exciting new treatment that has given hope to mesothelioma victims is called gene therapy. Gene therapy attempts to decipher why proteins within certain cells cause them to be resilient to cancer while some cells do not. A while back it was believed that genes were complete upon birth, and that they couldn’t affect conditions afflicted during life. This however, turned out to not be the case. Since then we have learned that smoking, sunlight and certain foods can all affect our DNA and make changes to our genetic code. These new insights provided by these conditions have allowed doctors to view many conditions like malignant mesothelioma in a new light.

There are many factors that contribute to Mesothelioma. Asbestos exposure is the primary contributing factor, but genetic mutations in individuals also worsen it. Gene therapy is a revolution in mesothelioma treatment because it replaces cancer-causing genes with genes that are medically constructed to die when exposed to cancerous growth. These ‘suicide genes’ are a possible way to slow and possibly stop the rapid replication of cancerous cells. Studies are also starting to begin experimenting with replacing cancer generating genes with genes susceptible to certain drugs. This would allow the cancer to be potentially eliminated with few side effects.

Gene therapy treatment is still in its beginning stages and is not yet 100% safe. However, this desperate situation suffered by mesothelioma victims, sometimes calls for various experimental treatments. Any hope for surviving mesothelioma outweighs many of the dangers involved.

Anti-Angiogenic Therapy - A New Approach To Mesothelioma

Introduction - What is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma, a cancer which attacks the lining of the lungs, chest, and abdominal cavity, is one of the most notorious cancers in the world today. It is a fatal, incurable disease - some statistics report that 9 out of 10 mesothelioma patients will die from the disease within 3 years. Only 5% will survive more than 5 yearsafter diagnosis.

Mesothelioma is caused by exposure to asbestos, a flexible, heat-resistant mineral fiber which was widely used and encountered in various industries, including shipbuilding, construction, and mining. Since the link between mesothelioma and asbestos was discovered, countless lawsuits have been filed by victims against the companies responsible for the exposure. New laws regulating the handling of asbestos were enacted.

Since that time, research into potential mesothelioma treatments has continued, with varying results. One of the newer therapies being investigated is known as anti-angiogenic therapy.

Angiogenesis

The term "anti-angiogenic" comes from angiogenesis, a word which means the growth and development of new blood vessels. As cancers progress, they quickly outgrow the blood supply provided to them by the body's blood vessels, and need to grow their own system of vessels to obtain a sufficient supply of oxygen and nutrients. Without these new blood vessels, the cancer cannot continue to grow and spread.

How Anti-Angiogenic Therapy Works

Anti-angiogenic therapy is aimed at preventing cancer cells from growing new blood vessels, thereby slowing or even stopping the development of cancer. It does so by targeting the two chemicals in the body which regulate the growth of blood vessels: the basic fibroblast growth factor (FGF-2) and the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF).This latter chemical is particularly important to mesothelioma patients; tests have revealed that people with mesothelioma exhibit VEGF levels much higher than those of patients suffering from other types of cancer. These results suggest that mesothelioma may have a strong link to VEGF, and thus may be more responsive to treatments which target VEGF.

One of the experimental drugs being tested against mesothelioma is bevacizumab. This drug has also been tested for use in patients with kidney, breast, ovarian, and prostate cancers, among others. Currently, the results from a study which ended in 2005 and compared the effectiveness of bevacizumab against two chemotherapy drugs (gemcitabine and cisplatin) are being analyzed and are yet to be released.

Whether anti-angiogenic therapy is a viable treatment or cure for mesothelioma remains to be seen. While scientists struggle to find new ways to fight mesothelioma, thousands of people continue to suffer from this devastating disease.

Mesothelioma Treatment Therapies

There are many types of treatment therapies available for mesothelioma, both conventional and experimental. This articles talks in details about the experimental therapies.

Some forms of mesothelomia treatment therapies are still in their experimental stages. Many of these new treatments are done in conjunction with traditional treatments. Some of these treatments are described below.

Immunotherapy is the process of modulating the body's immune system, thus turning it into a cancer-fighting tool. This is done in two ways: passive and active.

In passive immunotherapy, patients who do not produce their own anti-cancer immune molecules are administered with drugs such as cytokine and other immune system components in order to kill cancer cells.

Active immunotherapy, on the other hand, is the process of setting an immune system in the patient that will fight cancer cells. This method involves the removal of mesothelioma cancer cells. The cancer cells are studied in a lab to determine their antigens, the molecules that are found in the cells' surface. The cells are then treated to create a vaccine. If an immune reaction against the vaccine is stimulated, the immune system will also work against the cancer cells.

Heated intraoperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy is a more-recent surgical procedure pioneered by Dr. Paul Sugarbaker. This therapy involves removal of tumor followed by injection of chemotherapy agents heated to 40-48 degree Celsius. Combining chemotherapy with heat has been found to increase the effectiveness of chemotherapy. Studies also show, however, that heated chemotherapy is best for tumor less than 2mm in size.

Palliative Therapies To Treat Mesothelioma

Palliative Therapies To Treat Mesothelioma

Palliative treatments involve treatment for mesothelioma using procedures that relieve symptoms. It does not cure the disease but helps in dealing with the problem by improving quality of life. It helps in psychological, social, and spiritual needs of patients and their families. It is also called as comfort care, supportive care or symptom management.

Symptoms of mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is caused due to the exposure of the patient to asbestos. As it is difficult to diagnosis this cancerous disease in the early stages, patients and doctors are unaware of early symptoms. Early symptoms are usually mistaken to simple illnesses like breathlessness, cough and weight loss. But with the advancement of the disease, the symptoms also become severe. Thus palliative therapy is used to provide relief for the pain caused during mesothelioma. It includes various modes of treatment like medication, cognitive and behavioral therapy along with various other procedures to help patients deal with the disease. Palliative therapy is used along with other forms of traditional treatment for mesothelioma like radiation therapy or chemotherapy.

The main goal of palliative therapies is to offer comfort and to sustain highest quality of life for as long as the patient lives. As the extent of pain experienced by the patients is very high, palliation includes traditional pain management programs like pain killers along with stress management, meditation and massage therapy. If a patient is in his death bed, this therapy takes the traditional roles of the hospice movement. For the patient and his families there is an open line of communication to optimize patient care.

Some of the common palliative procedures to treatment mesothelioma are:

Chest Tube Drainage and Pleurodesis: This results in irritation within the layers covering the lungs leading to destruction of space between the layers so that there is no accumulation of fluid. Various agents like talc or bleomycin can be used for this purpose. The fluid is then drained out of the chest cavity with the help of chest tube.

Pleuroperitoneal Shunt: This is effective among patients with a trapped lung or when treatment has been ineffective for a patient.

Alcohol injection: To ease pain, doctors inactivate the nerves that pass the message of pain from the affected area to the brain by injecting certain alcohol. This is usually done during the course of the surgery or with the help of CT scan.

Palliative radiation therapy: Pain is also reduced using radiation therapy as it kills certain cancer cells which press against nerves. Radiation is usually associated with anti-inflammatory as well as pain relievers to maximize the relief of the disease. With this kind of treatment about two third of patients have reasonable to maximum improvement and this effects remain for a few weeks to many months. In the case of palliative radiation therapy, mesothelioma patients are given few larger doses of radiation over a period of several weeks.

Pain medications: strong pain-killing drugs are also prescribed during this treatment to reduce pain including narcotic drugs, which are non addictive.

The present preventive measures:

-Avoidance of exposure to asbestos

-Quit smoking

Mesothelioma Alternative Therapy - What Are Your Options?

Quite a number of patients afflicted with asbestos related diseases such as asbestosis and mesothelioma now-a days use different types of complimentary and alternative therapies in addition to conventional therapies like surgery and drugs.

These alternative therapies are used by patients coping with asbestos related disease as a form of pain management, to improve general health, and also to provide symptomatic relief.

Although these treatments do not offer a cure, they certainly help you to live more comfortable lives by providing relief from pain and stress.

The most commonly used alternative therapies include the following:

1} Acupuncture

This is one of the commonest forms of available alternative therapies today, and there are a lot of insurance companies offering coverage for this type of treatment. Acupuncture involves the insertion of extremely fine needles into pressure points at clearly defined locations in the skin to improve the balance and flow of factors called the Yin, Yang, Qi and Blood in traditional Chinese medicine.

This form of treatment provides relief from chronic pain, inflammation, anxiety and stress and it is one of the most commonly used alternative medicines in the treatment of asbestos related diseases.

2} Aromatherapy

This form of alternative therapy involves the use of fragrances to improve physical and psychological well being. The fragrances are applied in liquids called essential oils, which are distilled and highly concentrated plant based oils. Aromatherapists use these fragrances combined in the oils to provide pain relief and to improve the general well being of the patient.

Aromatherapy is often combined with massage , you receive a massage with carrier oils that have been mixed with small amounts of essential oil fragrances.

3} Massage

Massage therapy has been shown to provide a number of important health benefits. It improves blood and lymphatic flow and it is used to improve blood circulation. It also improves muscle tension.

Massage also stimulates nervous and digestive systems, relieve chronic pain and improve skin function. Many patients find this type of therapy useful in reducing anxiety and stress as well as reducing chronic pain.

4} Meditation

Meditation is a well known way of relieving stress, anxiety and depression. Meditation is now also used to manage pain and other symptoms of diseases. Many cancer patients add meditation to their treatment schedules to help to reduce pain, stress and anxiety. Certain studies have shown that meditation may be able to reduce tumor growth and improve your prognosis.

5} Supplements

Dietary supplements include vitamins, minerals, herbs, and amino acids. Vitamins, minerals, and amino acids are all needed by the body to carry out essential life functions, and supplements can help provide necessary chemicals when diet alone cannot. Many herbs can help treat diseases and conditions, as well as provide symptomatic relief. For example, flaxseed, ginseng, and garlic are all known to reduce blood pressure.

When it comes to supplements, it's very important to let your physician know the kind of supplements you are taking, as they can affect how well your prescription medications work. Some supplements can even have dangerous interactive effects when taken in conjunction with certain prescription medications.

6} TENS Therapy

Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation - commonly known as TENS therapy - is somewhat similar to acupuncture, in that this treatment stimulates certain defined body locations. However, while acupuncture uses fine needles, TENS therapy stimulates body points with the use of electrodes that deliver very mild electrical shocks.

Unlike many other types of complementary and alternative therapy, TENS has actually been approved by the FDA. While this doesn't automatically mean that TENS can provide a cure when it is used, it does mean that the treatment has been determined to be safe according to FDA regulations, and also means that TENS therapy is covered by insurance.

7} Yoga

The origins of yoga lie in India, where this ancient art is practiced more for spiritual reasons than for health-related reasons. Outside of India, yoga has become a popular form of exercise that is physically and psychologically calming and strengthening. Learning simple yoga techniques can help improve general health by toning and strengthening muscles, improving flexibility, and improving general health and one's state of mind.

8} Pet Therapy

Also known as animal-assisted therapy or animal-assisted activities, this type of therapy aims to improve the general health and well-being of patients by allowing them to interact with a variety of animals. The wonderful effects of animal interaction has long been known - the simple act of stroking a cat or dog can improve the mood, lift the spirits, and even provide some physical benefits (such as the temporary lowering of blood pressure). Pet therapy techniques can be used for a wide variety of medical conditions. For example, a physical therapist working with a person recovering from a stroke might bring a dog to a therapy session and have the patient brush the dog to help improve their motor skills.

Mesothelioma Therapy - What Are the Options?

Mesothelioma Therapy - What Are the Options?

Mesothelioma is an aggressive cancer that affects the membranes surrounding the internal organs of humans. When not detected until it has progressed to a late stage, it is often difficult, if not impossible to control. Adding to the particular danger of this cancer is that the symptoms are very general and non-specific. Because of this, it is often not diagnosed early enough. Exposure to asbestos is the leading cause of mesothelioma, documented in nearly all cases.

Because of its aggressive spread, you should contact your doctor as soon as you begin to suspect mesothelioma, especially if you have been exposed to asbestos at some point. You can first expect a screening from your doctor, which can include a variety of tests like X-Rays or CT scans. If these preliminary tests show any sign of mesothelioma, you can expect a long series of additional tests to rule out any other diseases.

The only definitive test for mesothelioma is a moderately invasive procedure called a biopsy. If your previous screenings come back positive, a small sample of tissue will be removed from the affected area and examined by a specialist. There are many different types and techniques of biopsy at your doctor's disposal, and he/she will select the right one depending on where the cancerous growth is located. Depending on which stage your cancer has advanced to, your Mesothelioma therapy options may be many. Mesothelioma can be classified as being in one of four stages of development.

Stage I is the earliest and very localized. If found at this stage, the prognosis can be quite good. Therapy options at this point can include surgical removal of the tumor, chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Clinical trials may also be used on a limited basis to determine the usefulness of new cancer fighting compounds.

Stage II refers to mesothelioma that has spread to other areas near the tumor. Once the cancer begins to spread, the prognosis rapidly deteriorates, however with the right treatment and mindset, hope for recovery still remains. Many of the same therapies for stage I are used for Stage II. Quite often with an individual who has stage I or stage II mesothelioma, the doctor will employ several therapies in conjunction with one another. While very effective, this can leave the patient in a very weakened state, and thus is not recommended for more advanced stages.

Stage III indicates the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes. At this point, techniques such as surgery are limited in their effectiveness, simply because of the volume of cancer in the patient. If surgery is elected during stage III or IV, it is usually to increase the quality of life for the patient. Radiation and chemotherapy can still be used at this stage as a mesothelioma therapy, however their ability to control the cancer is diminished significantly.

Stage IV is the most advanced type and is applied to cases where the cancer has spread to parts of the body far removed from the tumor. Usually, when stage IV is reached, the mesothelioma spreads to the brain and the prognosis is very low. Mesothelioma therapy options at this point are usually used to improve the patient's quality of life, although there have been cases where a patient has been responsive enough to treatment that remission is achieved.

The number one asset you have in beating this cancer has little to do with choosing your mesothelioma therapy, but is catching your disease early. More than the different techniques used to combat the cancer, the early discovery of it can determine your prognosis.
